Mauritius is charting an ambitious course toward becoming a digitally empowered economy, with artificial intelligence (AI) positioned at the center of its transformation. The government’s commitment to AI goes beyond aspiration — it is grounded in a comprehensive national strategy, targeted innovation programs, and robust fiscal support outlined in the 2025–2026 Budget.
At the heart of this transformation is the Mauritius Artificial Intelligence Strategy, crafted through extensive collaboration between government agencies, academia, and industry experts. This strategic document acknowledges AI as a transformative force capable of boosting productivity, fostering innovation, and improving the quality of life for all citizens. It highlights the need to build an inclusive AI ecosystem — one that combines research and development, workforce skills development, ethical governance, and regulatory oversight to ensure responsible adoption across all sectors.
To bring this vision to life, the government launched the AI Innovation Start-Up Programme under the Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation. This initiative supports emerging AI-driven startups with resources, mentorship, and cutting-edge infrastructure. The program is expected to stimulate innovation in areas such as fintech, healthcare, agriculture, and public services — sectors where AI can create measurable impact.
Complementing these efforts is the ICT Blueprint 2025–2029, which provides a detailed roadmap for national digital transformation. The blueprint emphasizes AI integration into development plans while ensuring inclusivity, sustainability, and democratic access to technology. Key focus areas include digital public services, universal digital literacy, and the promotion of green, AI-powered technologies.
The 2025–2026 Budget further underscores the government’s resolve by allocating dedicated funding to AI-driven initiatives and embedding AI into key sectoral strategies. From smart agriculture and intelligent healthcare to digital government services and connected transportation, AI is positioned as a catalyst for economic growth and improved public sector efficiency.
Mauritius’ vision of becoming an "Intelligent Island" — where technology enhances human development — is steadily materializing. By prioritizing capacity-building, fostering innovation, and ensuring equitable distribution of AI benefits, the nation is laying the foundation for a smarter, more connected, and resilient future.
As Mauritius advances on its journey toward becoming an intelligent island, the steps being taken today are shaping a more inclusive, efficient, and forward-looking nation for generations to come.
